Review of Announcing the Reign of God
Greg McKinzie
I picked up Announcing the Reign of God both because Arias is a Hispanic theologian and because the topic is of special interest. The combination usually makes for helpful reading in my context. As it turns out, Arias articulated and synthesized in 1984 (when the book was first published) an astonishing number of things that I have picked up here and there through my years of study and tried to hold together. He challenges the traditional notion of the gospel with a reading based foremost on Jesus own ministry and message, resulting in a holistic understanding of God’s work best described in Jesus' own words as "the Kingdom of God." For its size, the book deals with a great many important issues in what feels nonetheless like a thorough, well-rounded introduction to the holistic gospel of the Kingdom. It is definitely on my most-recommended list.
